If my welder is qualified with groove, which means qualified for pipe of diameter 73mm and above. Can I use that welder to weld set through nozzle, if nozzle diameter is less than 73mm, lets say 50mm? My doubt is due to the groove present in shell not on nozzle.

Yes the welder is qualified.
If the nozzle passes through the shell, the diameter of the nozzle is not a restriction based upon the qualification range of the welder.

At least that's how I recall an interpretation.

Have a good day.

The thickness of the shell would be the variable to address with the range of qualification. Diameter is not the concern.

Always, Sometimes, Maybe, or Except. Never fails.

Yup.

I think (for me) ASME IX is much clearer than some of the others and easier to follow but still pretty complicated. At least its not like the big red book where when it comes out AFTER 5 years for $500+ and STILL has an errata sheet with it. With some content very close in location and reference to errata sheets of old.

Have a good one Al.

Yea, my motion to have the Certification Committee boycott D1.1:2016 didn't get too far. One must not throw stones at the sacred cow.

Anything to change up either the CWI program or the Big Red Book will probably never go over well according to those annual financial reports.

Hence my allegiance to ASME....

I would in general concur with the opinions favorable to ASME. But then I get into the impact testing requirements of B31.3 and my head explodes.

js55, I was force fed B31.3 impact requirements for several years... I "think" I finally understand.... well, maybe sort of.....

jon,
I once thought that too. Then I find something new. Sometimes good. Sometimes not so good.

Sometimes it seems as if they deliberately obscure the subject. Guess mamma needs a new pair of shoes every so often....
