During fitup for the t-joint break test do they weld tack to tack(2" long) or are the tacks placed outside of the testing area? I would think outside of the testing area like other tests, I'm just looking for clarification.

Thanks.

I didn't want to clutter up the board with another tack welding question so i'll just put it here.

So, in D1.1 2010, 4.20.2.1 Extent of Qualification it states

"A tack welder who passes the fillet weld break test shall be qualified to tack weld all types of joints (except CJP groove welds, welded from one side without backing; e.g.,butt joints and T-, Y-, and K-connections)"

If I'm understanding that correctly, then you cannot tack weld on handrail, per se, without a pipe cert.

Am I interpreting this correctly?

If the hand rails are CJP,  Yes
