Hey everyone,

I believe I answered this CWI practice question correctly, but I'd like to confirm that my PROCESS of answering it was correct.

If a a welding procedure is being qualified for the following:
- welding ASTM 537 Class 2 plate welded to A517 Grade 100
- SMAW
- single-V-groove weld with steel backing
- 3/4" coupon
- 3G position

...If the required tests pass, what is maximum thickness qualified under this procedure?

a. 3/4"
b. 3"
c. 1.5"
d. No maximum
e. None

According to the 2016 CWI Book of Specifications, Table 7 – Thk Limitation of Plate/Pipe for Groove Welds for Proc. Qual.,
If the test weldment thickness is 3/4" to less 1-1/2," then
- the min. base metal T qualified is 3/16"
- the max. base metal T qualified is 2T

I believe I chose the right table, because the question references plate, groove weld, and procedure qualification.

So then, I used the equation '2T' to find the max, which is 2 x 3/4" = 1-1/2" (answer C).

Turns out that C is the correct answer, however, I'm hesitant to believe that the other info in the question (process, class, grade, position) were irrelevant.

Did I look at the right 'relevant' factors to solve this question???

The other information is irrelevant other than the process.

Though the other variables are irrelevant to the thickness qualified range, they could be related to other ranges but the question doesn't ask anything about those.

Thank you.

I was only about 30% sure that was the case.

Thanks for your feedback.

Thank you, I wasn't sure whether to pay attention to that and wasn't sure of the correct method to solve it if the process did change...
