Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / Bend Test in lieu of RT on Pipe Quals

Looking for a procedure to bend weld performance qualifications on 1-1/2 inch sch 80 aluminum pipe open root groove joint. I do not have the capabilities to perform RT, so that is why I would like to run with the bend test. We bend plate quals on a regular basis, but desire to qualify welds to weld open root pipe joints.

What code are you working to?

The bend radius is different for aluminum versus steel.

Yes, and for ASME IX quals you would probably have to do face and root bends. I recall that side bend specimens are 1/8" thick for aluminum with a larger bend radius as Neal mentioned. The face and root specimen prep could require machine work and would need to be looked at closely for the code you are using.

Highly recommend the wrap around bend testing method as prescribed for alloys such as 6061-T6 and any heat treatable aluminum alloy. AWS D1.2 recommends this procedure. Typical specimen thickness is 1/8 inch.
