First, the symbol is to an ISO standard. It is not a symbol defined by AWS A2.4. Long story short, I don't have a clue other than to suspect it was drawn incorrectly.

My recommendation; ask the person or company responsible for the drawing.

One side (arrow side) 13 mm depth of edge prep and other side (noted by the dashed lines) 7 mm depth of edge prep. Unprepared remainder the root face and 836 mm of weld length. Convex weld Toes shall be blended smoothly. A guess would be weld all around (ie both sides) (incorrect use of weld all around symbol) or complete weld penetration again incorrect. The groove weld size would be immediately to the left of the groove weld symbol and in parenthesis ()

Circle in center means gouging i.e. weld the one side and after completion gouge from back and than weld...

Interesting.

thanks - Al

How do you determine the weld sequence?

Which side do you weld first and which side is back gouged?
Parent - - By welderbrent (*****) Date 04-12-2017 13:31
Well, isn't that obvious Lawrence?  You backgouge from the side you already welded.  Everyone knows that.

LOL.  Oh please, don't tell me anyone even considers that as a possibility for one moment.  I was joking with Lawrence.

Good questions actually.

Good ol American symbols with order of operations!

That circle thing just can't be right.

Let's see if I understand this unconventional welding symbol. I say unconventional because I have never seen the welding process listed on, either above or below, the reference line.

So, based on the symbol as (by the detailers employed Lawrence's employer?)  presented we have:
1) first operation; a backing weld on the other side deposited using SAW
2) second operation; a weld deposited in the bevel groove on the arrow side using the GMAW process followed by a back gouging operation as noted in the tail of the welding symbol.

Very interesting approach.

I believe I would have reversed the sequence by depositing a backing weld on the other side using GMAW, followed by a back gouging operation on the arrow side. Once the BG was completed I would weld the bevel groove on the arrow side using SAW. But what do I know about welding symbols and welding?

Maybe I'll pull out my copy of A2.4 in the morning.

Ok if we are going to get the microscope out....I agree with Al in the order of operations working from the arrow out on the welding symbol...ie as depicted the backing weld would be placed first, then the next line would have you weld out the groove. By moving the backing weld symbol farthest away from the arrow, it would indicate that as the last operation rather than the first.

I looked through A2.4:2007...where did they hide the order of operations? I thought the older editions spelled out the order of operations in the text somewhere, but I don't have access to all of the older A2.4's that I used to have.

I did find an example on the AWS Symbols chart

edit:

edit 2: Oh good grief! this new camera has rotated the stinking picture...

Al,
I feel sure Lawrence found a picture showing the order of operations and quickly posted without giving much thought to it....been there, done that

Al,
I noticed in the back of A2.4:2007, they included examples of ISO welding symbols along side the AWS for comparison.
....although, it didn't show anything regarding this particular question by the OP

If I wanted to visit a humorless forum I would return to the AWS members only site. You notice I haven't played in that sandbox for a while. It too sanitary for my liking.

I agree that Lawrence probably grabbed something quick and readily available. Been there, done that myself on more than one occasion. But, it is still fun to poke with a stick now and again. I did make a comment as to whether his detailing crew drew the symbol. We all know Lawrence is no rookie at this game! Heck, he's nearly as old as me! He has more hair, but i can outrun him if there was a bear chasing us. Besides, he sent me a message explaining their sequence of operations; subarc first, back gouge, fill to complete with GMAW.

Best regards - Al

Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a person without any humor. I didn't pick up on the sarcasm in your typing. Ok, carry on.....

What? Me. sarcastic?

How's the world treating you John? Still enjoying the wonderful world of working for the lab and in the field or missing the comfort of your home away from home?

Well Al, I'm sitting here in an energized AEP sub-station waiting on my next concrete truck to test, then I'm off to climb a silo to inspect some column splices at a Dominion Power plant about a hour and half drive from here. Then I'm going to try to enjoy my Easter weekend.

Enjoy the Easter Egg hunt. Remember, leave the brown ones on the ground. Those are special. Farm Code material.

Best regards - Al
