diesel engine maintenance

I bought the diesel generator few years ago. But it seems that it is not good, the engine is old. Sometimes I can not start it normally. I want to search maintenance tips on diesel engine. Any help.
I find a lot of articles that introduce the tips listed below:

Can you provide any clues as to what types of problems you are having? Black exhaust, The batteries turn the engine over very slowly, White exhaust Engine turns over easily, but will not start.

Based on the information you provided I would say to check the fuel tank to see if it is empty.
