Hi all,
I need to verify this.
Why other material other than listed in ASTM such as S275JR must classify as unlisted material to qualify the procedure. We all knew that S275JR is equivalent to A36.(less or more). Why we cannot select the material which have a slightly higher strength than S275JR such as A516 gr 70 to qualify for S 275JR and all material no 1 group 1 and 2.

please assist me to understand this.

I guess you are refering to ASME IX. Below is one of the reason.

The column “ISO/TR 15608 Group” in Table QW/QB-422 is a listing of the assignments of materials
in accordance with the grouping criteria of ISO/TR 15608:2005, Welding—Guidelines for a metallic materials
grouping system, and it is consistent with the assignments found in ISO/TR 20173:2008, Grouping systems for materials
— American materials. While this listing is provided as a convenience to users worldwide, it is provided for information
only. Section IX does not refer to this grouping as a basis for establishing the range of base metals qualified for either procedure or performance qualification.
