"Arkansas Bell Hole" may return better results. Try that and if you don't get any results from a couple of search engines, try back here. There is a search function on this site also.

Didn't you ask this same question laast year ? That teacher needs some new material!

Good day

A bell-hole is a term for the extra working room which is excavated in a ditch to allow access and welding of a tie-in weld, sleeve etc.

An Arkansas bell-hole is an old term for a 6G pipe test. I cut my teeth in pipeline inspection in the 1970's and haven't heard that expression in 20 years. I hope someone can come up with the origon.

5G is called a bellhole, as was said, because that is the position of the pipe in a regular old bellhole weld. Once you get into the Ozark mountains tho, a regular bellhole becomes a thing of the past as you are either going uphill or downhill, hence, Arkansas bellhole equals 6G.
As was posted earlier, a bellhole is a place in the ditch that's been widened to make room to weld.

I just spent some time in an bell hole ( I think they drop the Arkansas part) on a shut down where we had to "tie-in" an hot water heating system (10"- CS Main). It took 17 hours and 4 welds to make it happen.
The temperature (remember, this is in a ditch outside) was around 30 degrees F, but I think the constant snow was really the icing on the cake.
Anyway, we came back the next day to make sure we didn't have any leaks (added 2- 10"-butterfly valves) and all was well. Somehow, it didn't seem all that bad crawling around in the dirt to make those welds. What no one has metioned about a "bell hole" is that there is only "enough" room to make the weld which means the one doing the welding can't be too concerned about staying clean when you are in shut-down mode.
I can't wait for the Thanksgiving shut-down where we get to tie more miles of piping. Oh yeah, you know there will be a bunch of bell holes to crawl around in and make some more welds.
Be well.

Hats off to you Gerald, memory like a "Steel Trap". I have to carry a picture ID around to help remember who I am.

I don't know what I had for breakfast yesterday but for some reason I remember the authors of the welding textbook I had in highschool.

I'm thinking that ability will start fading TOOO Soon.

I'm sitting at home right now with a broken ankle unable to work as a boilermaker so I am passing my time on every welding related forum I can find.

Have a good day

Thanks,

I appreciate the kind words and the time everyone puts here on this forum. If I write anything sounding crazy I'm blaming the pain medicine!

A good horse is worth more than a boilermaker. I'd take the lame horse to the vet, but shoot the boilermaker and call the hall, they've got plenty. But that's just me.

Only because they can make more dogfood. If I stay in my current level of activity, I should bring a pretty good price at the Alpo plant.

Be gentle with that ankle so it has a chance to heal well. Best wishes from here.
