Dear colleagues,
I am going to take exam for AWS CWI in next few months but there is one point in table 11 of document AWS CWI practical BOS: 2017 make me confuse.
Table 11 quotes that: "Radiography may be substituted for bend testing for the SMAW, GTAW, GMAW (except short-circuiting), and FCAW processes, as
applicable, for qualifications".
As my standpoint, examination requirements for performance qualification are: Visual examination + RT. Bend testing is optional If welder uses SMAW, GTAW, GMAW and FCAW (because RT may replace for Bend testing).
When performance qualification uses GMAW (short-circuiting) process, examination requirements are (mandatory): Visual + RT + Bend testing
Please help me to clarify. Many thanks for your clarification.
It is easier to look at it as:
Visual + Bend Test or RT - for SMAW, GTAW, GMAW (except short-circuit) and FCAW
Visual + Bend Test - for GMAW-S (short-circuit)
DO NOT PAY ANY ATTENTION TO ANYTHING YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHEN IT COMES TO THE PART B BOOK OF SPECIFICATION!!
Yes, I did put that in all caps on purpose.
Whatever your normal code is, it does not apply here. And, l don't know what you are referring to, according to D1.1 Clause 4.16 VT+ bend tests are required BUT RT may be substituted. Thus, it is worded like the BOS.
Memory is a bad thing during the Part B. Don't even think about your job and the applicable code you normally go by nor your shop/work QC manual. It will mess you up. Just read it (BOS) at face value and go with what it says.
He Is In Control, Have a Great Day, Brent
Thank you very much, Mr. Brent
Brent hit the nail on the head.
