If a welder passes the restricted access test in D1.8 with steel backing, in accordance with Option A, is the welder also qualified for production welds with ceramic backing? 5.1.3 states that "The Supplemental Welder Qualification For Restricted Access Test shall use the type of backing to be used on the project." My interpretation of this means that a welder can't take this test with steel backing and then use ceramic backing for production welds, nor can a welder take this test with non-steel backing and then use steel backing for production welds. Option A must be used when steel backing is used in production, and Option B must be used when non-steel backing is used in production. Any comments or thoughts are greatly appreciated.
