Good Day gents,

My client want to weld some X56 pipe OD= 30", thk= 1", to a connector of same size, grade 4130.
They want to do GTAW + SMAW and use ER80S D2 for root pass and E10018-D2 electrode for fill and cap.

I tend to disagree as that electrode is not really adapted for X56 welding.

Can you please tell me what can happen if the desired electrode will be used and suggest a better option - if its the case?

Where is the engineer during these discussions?

You have provided scant information, yet you are asking us to provide a recommendation without telling us the application, the code or much of anything else.

Those two materials can be welded together, but there are some items that need to be discussed with the welding engineer.
1. X56 is a P1 Group 2 material and has UTS of 71 KSI.
2. 4130 is considered an unclassified material under ASME (If it's A519-4130) (Unknown)
3. Need to know the code of construction. (Unknown)
4. Typically 4130 (in my world anyway) is to be PWHT where X56 does not, unless its 1" or over. Again depending on the COC. For example. Under ASME your given exemptions. (Unknown)
5. ER80S-D2 is a 80 KSI material but that could change a little during PWHT, if required. So, material match to filler metal looks ok.
As Al has already indicated. There are to many unknowns. You need to get a welding engineer involved.

My thoughts anyway.

Good Day gents,

First of all, sorry for such a late reply. I'm working in oil&gas, doing much offshore.

To get to the point:
1. the applicable code is API 1104. The client described the products as being risers/riser connectors. The weld joint is between a 30" pipe and a connector.
2. the thickness of the welded joint is 25,4 mm. Pre-heating and PWHT will be applied.
3. the client want to use ER80S-D2 on root and hot pass and E100018-D2 for fill and cap. My concern is about using E10018 as the product is adapted for low alloy steel like 4130 and not really for X56.
