Up Topic Welding Industry / Inspection & Qualification / AWS D17.1 - Qualifying unequal thickness fillet weld

Hello,

I'm trying to find an answer within the AWS D17.1 to the question how
should I qualify a fillet weld between unequal thickness plates.
We are welding a 2.5'' plate to a 5/16'' aluminum plate.

according to table 5.2, using a plate thickness t will qualify between 0.t5 to 2t,
according to figure 5.6 it seems that both of the test plates are supposed to be in the same thickness (T),
there is, however a note saying that : "where the members differ in thickness more than 10% of the thicker member, the cap sheet shall be the thicker".

So, Is there an option to use unequal thickness for qualification? and what determines the thickness? the thicker plate or the thinner?

Thanks.

Shay,

Check out Annex A figure A.4 (pg 63 of the 2017 std). T is defined as the thinnest member.

Cheers.
