I have a question about if the attached 1" groove weld specimens would pass or fail the AWS D1.1 welder qualification side bend test.

I am currently qualifying our welders to the AWS D1.1 code and all the samples I have tested until now have either been a clear pass or a clear fail. This sample on the other hand while it does not look pretty none of the discontinuities are at or above 1/8" most coming in around 3/16". According to clause 4.9.3.3 the sum of all discontinuities larger than 1/32" but smaller than 1/8" cannot equal 3/8".

My question is do I count the discontinuities of both samples for this 3/8 limit or do I inspect each sample independently.

The sum of the discontinuities of each specimen is about 1/4". The sum of the discontinuities for both specimens totals 1/2".

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Each bend specimen is judged independent of the others.
