column has a lot of holes that were drilled oversized but in the correct location. 1 1/8'', should have been 13/16''. Code is D1.1  I have looked everywhere and i cant find anything that says we cant plug and redrill all holes to the correct diameter. Anyone disagree?

Make sure you have a qualified procedure.

That much of a correction for difference in size may need to be run through the engineer and have UT performed before redrilling.

See Clause 5 for mislocated holes.  I know you said it is located correctly, but that is a large size difference.  Engineer may want a soundness check prior to allowing the redrill.

I would agree with you Brent if the holes in the column are subject to tensile stress. Unless this is a multistory high rise, it is unlikely the columns are loaded in bending or tension. However, considering we have no idea what the thickness of the sections in question are and we don't know with any degree of certainty what the loading conditions are, there is no harm in passing this by the engineer.

I don't know how many holes you're talking about, but another option might be to ask for approval to increase the hole size in the connecting members to 1 1/8 and use 1" diameter bolts (1 1/8 holes are now the standard hole diameter for 1" bolts). In the connecting members, the AISC minimum edge distance for 1" bolts is 1 1/4". Just a thought.

Goes to show, there's always more than one way to skin a cat.
