Dear all,
I’m planning to prepare PQR for SS310 plate with 4140 shaft.Welding process SMAW. Thickness SS 304-20mm, 4140-50mm. Joint fillet. Can you please advice me for the following
Which electrode can I use (E 308 is ok?)
Pre heat details
Cooling method after welding
PWHT required?
Now we have 4140 shaft is available, is it possible to make PQR with shaft or we need to make pipe with4140?

Probably one of the worst combinations ever.

Is this being hobbled together in someone's back yard?

Just wondering.

The problem is the carbon content of the 4140 is about 0.4%. The filler metal will mix with the base metal to form an alloy composed of the filler metal and the base metal that is melted and mixed with the filler metal. High carbon and chrome produces hard brittle chrome carbides. That isn't ever a good combination.
