If a person takes an AWS 3/8 structural plate test in the 3G and 4G positions and fails the 4G but passes the 3G is he still qualified to weld in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions, or does he have to take the complete test over again?

rdavid1962, I would have him retest on the 4G, but pass him on the 3G for F, H, and V-up, like you stated.

So he is still qualified and can weld but not in the overhead position correct? It had been said that you cant pass 1/2 of the test you must pass both in order to weld at all.

Exactly. The vertical test is still valid, so the welder is qualified as if only the vertical qualification test was taken and passed. It isn't a case of all or nothing.

The same holds true for the pipe test. The welder attempts to pass in the 6G and fails. He has no qualifications.
The same welder takes the 2G and 5G, passes the 2G and fails the 5G; his qualifications are as if he only took the 2G test.

The answers are correct as apply to most AWS structural codes.

"It had been said that you cant pass 1/2 of the test you must pass both in order to weld at all."

Now there can be authorities other than code possibly at play.

For example:   An employer may have work that requires a welder to have all position competency and therefore require both tests be passed before hiring or production welding.  It may be written in the quality manual or job description.

If the above is not the case.  The welder may be qualified to do work in the positions associated with the test that was passed.

But Lawrence, your adding information or requirements not in evidence in the original post. the post simply refers to AWS structural welding. The contractor or the authority could say you can only hold the electrode holder or gun with one hand or hanging upside down. Those wouldn't be AWS requirements.

I believe I recollect an interpretation on this related question as it applies to tubulars (it could be ASME or AWS, I can't remember). If the welder fails the 6G, he isn't qualified to weld in any position. However, if the welder welds a 5G successfully, but fails the 2G, he is qualified for only those positions the 5G qualifies the welder to weld. In other words, the welder is not qualified to weld in the horizontal positions.

I was suggesting that other requirements “could” be added and it’s prudent to look at the possibility.

Or that’s what I was trying to do :)
