Gentlemen, we are making fillet welds on 304 SS in the vertical position using GTAW. The WPS says stringer or weave beads with no restriction on weave width. This is a prequalified procedure. D1.6, Table 3.5 says Maximum Single Pass Layer Width is 1/2". Also, saying the Max. Single Pass fillet weld size is 3/16. These fillets we are making are anywhere from 3/16 to 1/2". What would be the maximum weave width allowed 1/2"? Thanks for any help.

If the maximum single pass fillet weld size is 3/16-inch, the 1/2-inch fillets would require multiple beads.

The 1/2-inch fillet weld would have a face width of 0.707-inches, so that exceeds the maximum weave width per your post. Multiple beads would be required to span the weld face.

If math isn't your strong suite, try drawing the fillet welds to scale and measure the weld face.

So the maximum the welder can weave is 3/16 on fill passes?

From your post, the maximum weave is 1/2-inch per layer.

The 3/16-inch fillet can be a single pass with a face width of just a little more than 1/4-inch. A larger fillet weld such as a 1/4-inch fillet weld would require a multipass weld. The 1/4-inch fillet weld could be deposited as a root pass of 3/16-inch, followed by a cover pass 1/16-inch thick with a face width of just a little under 3/8-inch.

Got it, thanks Al.
