Southwest Steel is a member of AWS and we have a welding problem that we need solved. We are trying to establish a welding procedure to weld ASTM 276 type 316 SS to ASTM A 693, Type 630 Cond H1025 with a Brinell of 335. We have tried E308 flux core as a filler metal and everything passed except two of the bend tests failed on the A693 side of the heat affected zone. What filler metal would you suggest that we use and any other tid bits of advice would also be appreciated? The filler metal does not need to be a tough as the A693.

What did you do for a PWHT?

Pre weld heat treatment was used but only about 70 degrees. We stayed between 150 and 180 degrees on the weld passes. We can not use a lot of preheat or we will loose our brinnell hardness.

Actually, I was wondering if you did any Post-weld heat treatment, although the preheat you mention is important also.

For filler metal, a E309 probably would be better but E308 should work also. I believe there is a big enough tensile strength difference between type 630 (17-4PH) and type 316 that longitudinal bend tests should be used. A wrap-around bender would also work better on side bends than a push-thru type bending machine.

I think you confirmed my thoughts also. Our shop CWI and superintendent decided to us the 308 because we had it in stock. Not a very good reason in my opinion.

They also used FCAW which to my knowledge is not really recommended. Any thoughts on Welding type.

See if this helps:
