I have a customer with a cattle gap made from Railroad Iron, one of the sections is broken.Does anyone know of a good DC electrode, that I could use to repair it?
E 7018 will weld it. There is a lot of flex on this structure so use a full penetration weld. Double vee and back gouge or grind to solid metal and weld.
Thanks, 357max. I'll use a Rosebud to preheat the rail after I grind a vee on each section, then I will use a 1/8 E7018 to put it back together. Thanks again! Gawelder
My recommendation from experience is 7018 all the way out to prevent hydrogen cracking. The eleven uses waterglass ie water ie hydrogen to bind the flux. This hydrogen gets into the weld and cracks. Grind the rust and crud off down to solid metal. Works great. The preheat doesn't have to be greater than 500 degrees F.
