Hi bogieman!

There is'nt any one test that would be considered a "general(correct spellnig:) certification" for GTAW (TIG)...

ha thanks. what would be the best certification to take if all i do is tig on meat grade stainless steel

I think there are codes governing food process and medical welding. You most likely will have to test according to one of those codes that govern the type of welding you will be involved with.

You might be interested in referring to
AWS D18.1:1999 - "Specification for welding of Austenitic Stainless Steel Tube and Pipe in Sanitary (Hygienic) Applications". It refers back to AWS B2.1. for Qualification.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but, lately I've been busy which is a good situation for me these days...

I did'nt serve on the USS Michigan but, I did help build the "Boomer"!
I also worked on the Ohio, Illinois, and I lost track of how many Los Angeles class "688" boats@ EB in "rotten Groton", CT back in the day!

On the attack boats, I worked mostly on repair welds in the "wet docks" in preparation for commisioning... After work, I'd end up @ "Elfies" or the "El Bolero". Many Moons ago!!! Thanks for asking.

Yes ! I have some pictures. I havent really seen anything in the news. I found it very interested that this sub hit a sea mountian. the damage looked very extensive, and was woundering if there should have been more damage down the side. maybe they didnt hit a mountian.

For general TIG certification, you would need to do an f6 on p1 material.
If you were to weld on stainless steel, you would need to do an f6 on p8 material with purging (usually argon).
p1 material is carbon steel; p8 is stainless steel material and f6 refers to the gas tungsten arc welding process, whether it be on carbon or stainless material.
