I need to stress relieve a weldment. I am joining 1 inch A36 to 3.5 inch A514 (T-1). Since A514 is Q&T, I do not want to transform the microstructure - loss of strength.

Two Questions:

1) What is the transformation temperature for A514?

2) Rather than stress relieving the entire weldment at a rate of 1 hour per inch of thickness, I would like to relieve the weld area only....so I am thinking 0.5 hr per inch of thickness..... comments?

Thanks,
Cain

You will loose strength if you PWHT above the tempering temperature of the T-1. Get a certification from the manufacturer that specifies the tempering temperature they used, then make sure you do not go within 25-50F of that temperature. However, watch for cracking. T-1 is susceptable to PWHT cracking, and is not really designed for PWHT applications. We have had fair luck with PWHT on thin T-1, but haven't tried anything very thick.
