Hi When i went to school for pipe fitter i saw that they had an electrode for the SMAW process used for cutting steel. I am wondering now and trying to find on the internet who makes those rods and the numbers on rod? Or where to find them and maybe purchase them? I guess you need alot of amps from the arc welder.

Search 'cutrode'.
You may have as much luck using 6010 or'11.
SMAW makes a mess of cutting, many better processes available.

I've seen guys on occasion cut gage plate with regular welding rods because under the circumstances nothing else was available. I did a different search and came up with these two links for underwater cutting:

These cutting and gouging electrodes dont usually have a specification. Most manufacturers produce a version. Heres a bit of technical info:

Hope this is useful.

The rods you are looking for are called Chamfer Rods.
Search the internet looking for "Chamfer Rods". Don't forget to put commons on both sides of those words to limit your search.

The replies you have, so far, (in addition to 6010) involve three different processes: exothermic coated rod, oxy-arc, and carbon / air arc. Only one (exothermic) involves just the rod. The other two require an oxygen or air supply in addition to the electrode.

Just Exothermic rods im interested in. Thanks for all the replys so far.
