Need info on ways to weld mild steel to 6061 Aluminum. Have seen a sample and think it was a Eutectic rod, but the fellow who had it couldn't remember. Thanks, Paul
I have some ALL-STATE STRONGSET NO.509 solder that claims to have the ability to join dissimilar metals such as aluminum and steel. Melts at 509 degrees F. I have not used it so I cannot verify their claims, but I know it can be done. Although I have never heard of welding aluminum to steel. Good luck.
We use Detacouple with 5056 aluminum and A516 steel. It is an explosion bound aluminum to mild steel plate. We weld the mild steel to the side with mild steel and the aluminum to the aluminum side. We have built 110 foot boats with steel hull and aluminim deck and superstructure. We have also built 170 foot boats with a steel hull and deck and an aluminum superstructure. These vessels have been used by the Coast Guard since 1985 and the Navy since 1991 with no trouble.
Friction welding is another option.
