If a part is welded to AWS D1.1, is it possible to do a repair weld if the length is too short? The blueprint calls out for a fillet weld with a minimum of 1/4", but some of them are just shy of it. The blueprint does not say yeah or nay to a repair and I'm thinking one more pass would be okay.

Thanks in advance

a call to the shop forman , qc/qa person,or CWI is in order. sometimes rework can cause more problems than they fix

Hi Michelle,

If the fillet weld size called for is 1/4" (leg size) you can be undersize by equal to or less than 3/32" for a maximum of 10% of weld length.

Hope this helps,

Brian

Good answer Brian, I was thinking the same myself but Michelle is talking about length, isn't she? One would naturally assume she meant leg size by the size she indicated but who knows???

Actually you are both correct- I needed to know if the weld could be welded longer if needed as well as the fillet not being big enough (that had to be 1/4") I figured if the fillet could be made bigger going a little longer would be okay too. Thanks guys!

Longer would be acceptable as long as it does not interfere with anything. Start past the weld termination and weld back to it.

Brian,

Thanks, but you guys definently had it right- weld repair may cause more problems than solve. THe guys, without my approval, went ahead and basically re-welded everything (except a few here and there) and it warped it completely outta spec! So we have bigger issues. We are thinking about re-heat and clamps to pull it out, but we'll see. Thank you all for your help.

What thickness of material is involved?

1/4 inch, but the kicker is the material- 1045! Yes it has definently become a nightmare.
