Some literatures said Ta can be fusion welded to Ti (laser or TIG). I tried laser butt welding but the welds sound brittle.

Any comments? Thanks.

As you may already be aware, Ta and Ti are both easily welded materials. The question of welding Ta to Ti is interesting. I'm wondering about the application for this combination, why do you need to join these two metals? Also, what exactly do you mean by "the welds sound brittle", did you actually perform some type of destructive test? With regard to the actual metallurgy of the Ta/Ti weld, hopefully you'll get a response from a metallurgist that has experience with this.

I have laser welded Ta to Ti and SEM analysis on fracture surface indicated that the weld is brittle. The brittlement might be caused by the shielding because Ta is very reactive at 343 C or above. Oxygen and nitrogen contamination might be the reason. I am still working on it and have made some progresses to solve the issue.
