I am trying to section some TIG welds to determine the weld penetration. Is there a system/components (fine lapping paper, solutions, etc) that I need to buy to be able to visually determine the exact weld penetration?
Addition: Material is 316L stainless steel.

SSmith,
you can use an etching process. For carbon steel it would be Hydrochloric acid and water. (muriatic) The procedure for etching is found in ASME Sec. IX QW-471 through QW-473.5.
Hope that helps
Jim

Jim,
Do you have a copy of those sections that you could e-mail me? Also, I forgot to mention I am TIG welding 316L stainless steel. Thanks.

SSmith,
I'm sorry I don't have a electronic copy of Sec IX to send you.

Thanks

The better the finish, the easier it will be to see the penetration zone.
