The smaller filler wire will definitely help. I wouldnt go any hotter with your amperage. 316 Stainless is a single phase metal so you wont run into any martensite, but you can burn that chrome out of the base metal causing it to turn into chromium carbide which is a VERY brittle metal. Depending on what thickness metal you are welding I would use the 3/32 or 1/8 wire and run your amperage in the 60 to 80 amp range to start out. Let me know if this helps you out.
