Both of these are nominal 1-1/4Cr-1/2Mo electrodes for welding the Grade 11 (P11, T11, F11) and Grade 12 (P12, T12, F12) base metals. The E7018-B2L has a maximum of 0.05% carbon content and a minimum tensile strength of 75 ksi per AWS A5.5. The E8018-B2 has a specified carbon content of 0.05 to 0.12% and a minimum tensile strength of 80 ksi. The E7018-B2L used to be classified as E8018-B2L, however the electrode manufacturers frequently were unable to meet the 80 ksi minimum after the test coupons were subjected to postweld heat treatment for 8 hours at 1250-1300 F. The E7018-B2L has a little more ductility and is often used for applications where postweld heat treatment is not performed. The E8018-B2 has higher resistance to high temperature creep damage.
