Hi Guys,
I am doing a welding test using Mig solid wire in vertical up position. The joint is grooved (60 degree included) with steel back up. plate thickness 1/2'', wire diameter 0.045'', C25 gas. Short arc, 125-135A, 17V.
Problem: The bead is excessive covex.
I am kind of no where to go. Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks
Agong

try slowing your wire speed. Focus on the sides.

As was said, pause longer on the sides and move faster across the middle. Practice on some Tee joints or flat beads on plate.

Pause at the sides and the middle will take care of itself. Also you may be trying to hold too steep of a gun angle.

Thanks a lot guys.
Sides pause longer, more push angle. Good suggestions. I got much better bead shape.

Hello Agong, I might make one other suggestion to try here. Everyone has given you really sound suggestions. If you would like to try one other thing, you might try starting the arc in the center of the joint and then bring arc out to the side of the groove, step straight across to the other side of the groove and then push it back to the center again, then repeat the process over again building on the shelf that you have just formed, as mentioned, don't use a lot of upward gun angle and try to use a nice steady progression. Good luck and regards, aevald

You can try to increase the voltage to 19-21. That can flatten the bead as well.

I was gonna mention the voltage too, but figured you were locked into the parameters you typed in the 1st post.

Here is something that gives a little perspective on "fast across the middle"
