Looking at sec 7.2.5 and fig 7.1 in the 06 edition, I get this out of it: 1) the crack or burst (same thing) can not extend more than 1/2 the distance from the head periphery (outer edge) to the shaft, and, 2) cannot exceed the value from: .25(H-C). SSSSSSOOOOOOOO, if the head diameter of a 5/8" shear stud= 1 1/4", shaft is .625", then .25(.625)=5/32".
which I take to mean that up to a 5/32" crack is allowable within the first 5/16" from the outer edge. Per code. Which pretty much gives you your coarse of action. I apparently have either too much time on my hands, or had too much coffee today.
