I understand that there are meny grades of stainless steel. But commanly I would like to know pre-heating is realy essential when welding of stinless steel. Sydney

In the great majority of the time it is not recommended to preheat SS except to slightly heat it to remove the moisture. In exceptional cases where one is welding 2 different thicknesses, it might be recommended to heat the thicker material (stainless or carbon steel) slightly to insure a more even cooling rate.
