I'm going to jump out on a limb and assume that you are talking about stick(SMAW) electrodes.

E[XX][X][X]
    ^
   Tensile Strength

E[XX][X][X]
         ^
         Position

E[XX][X][X]
              ^
              Coating/Operating Characteristics

Examples:

E7018 :
70 ksi
1 = out of position rod (fast freeze)
8 = low hy

E7028 :
70 ksi
2 = flat or horizontal positions only (very soupy puddle)
8 = low hy

I don't think that the #3 is used to indicate position.

The #4 indicating position = down hill travel only

The 4, or "fourth digit" specifies the type of coating and the current to be used with the electrode.  Unless I'm mistaken, the 4 indicates an iron powder titania coating with the current being either AC, DC- or DC+.

Scott,
You are correct, if you're talking about the last digit. I was assuming he was asking about the position digit(next to last digit).

Sorry John.  I wasn't even thinking about the third digit.  I was too busy wondering why you would spend your time shaving some guy who can't spell.
