I would like to adivce from some veterans about moving west as an independant welder. I have heard from alot of people that there is plenty of money to be made in the oil fields of Texas. I am a proficiant welder that would like to travel while I'm still young. I have a Red Face machine mounted on a rig and thinking of heading west. I just don't want to waste my time if it isn't worth it. I am very confident in my welding ability and have experience welding pipe, but not much fitting experience. I would mainly like to know about insurance, equipment, and availability of work etc...

You may want to hold up on that. I don't know how much you keep up with the news, but just north and east of Birmingham Al, A huge deposit of natural gas has been found. Given the growth in LNG, its a matter of time before that blows open in AL.

They can not find enough welders here in Houston, Tx. Insurance is a must but I know of at least 3 companies hiring at the moment.

You will need at least 1 mil/w 2mil aggregate. If you are very very lucky, it will cost you 1000 bucks bi annually.

That's not too bad I carry that here. From hearing people talk I thought it was an extreme amount. But I'm sure that the premiums will rise because of the nature of work.
