i don't currently have a copy of aws 3.0. does anyone know if there is a definition for split layer in 3.0

Yes there is and a sketch as well.

Split Layer Technique: A welding technique that results in layers having more than one weld bead.

The sketch is my own so as not to infringe on AWS' drawings in A3.0. The dimensions are not part of the definition. I used this sketch for one of my courses on AWS D1.1 to show the intent of Table 3.7 for SAW and FCAW.

Hi 803056, i like your sketch on the split layers.
How did you put that diagram in the post?  There's always something new that we can all inprove on.

Hello Welder;

I used AutoCad, exported it, imported it to MSWord, saved it as a webpage, opened it with Adobe and saved it as a JPEG. No one said it would be easy and I'm not saying there isn't an easier way. I hope I stumble on  to one that is easier.
