In Europe it is often referred to as MAG.

Phil,
MIG = Metal Inert Gas
MAG = Metal Active Gas
Both GMAW but different applications.
Can't remember which gases are used with MAG but the last time the topic was posted on the UK Welder forum the postings went on forever,
Regards,
Shane

The inert gases would be helium, argon or a combination of argon with helium or helium with argon. Common active gases would be oxygen, CO2, nitrogen and hydrogen used for GMAW. Dip Transfer, short arc, or short circuit is used to describe Short Circuit Metal Transfer.

Heard a few years ago by myself at a welding seminar.  "Dunebuggy bubblegum!" Referring to process used to fill poorly fitted joints.
