Hi, I'm rebuilding a 47' stubby (shorthood). The machine ran fairly well when I bought it but just for my own peace of mind I'm going over it bottom to top. Already replaced: oil filter and lines, rebuilt mag, plugs & wires, fuel filter & lines, rebuilt carb, ported+polished intake/ exhaust, (I know it's a little extreme), and a new muffler. Long story short, I was wondering if the machine runs well with no smoke out the exhaust or the crankcase vent would it be worth taking off the head?? Has anybody else ever had problems with cranks,cams, valvetrain, front, or rear seal. Actually the rear seal leaks a tiny bit which I will be replacing. Any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated.
P.S.- It welds like nobody's business, can't beat the old stubbies !!
yeah, sounds like its more trouble than its worth. drop it off to my place next time you head north.

By the way, did ya get that cracked block fixed or replaced, and how are ya making out with that exciter armature??
I'll come over and fix your machines $60/hr. + sub ;-)
the block is on hold for now and I still haven't figured out how to test my exciter. did a bit of welding with it a couple days ago and it seemed the same as always.

do you have a spare armature in good working cond. and willing to get rid of? its for a '55 and its sa200 33" from end to end. thanks
Do a compression check, if all four are reasonably the same (within 20psi or so), no smoke, no blowby, I would leave it alone.

thanks for the info, those old F162's run around 90 psi. if I was told right. Feels like lots of compression starting it with that crank handle, but I'm gonna check it tommorow w/ a gauge.
