Hi guys,
Anyone has experience welding HK40 to A36 butt joint? Got crack above 1000C degree.
Any input will be appreciated.

An in-service crack or a crack upon completion of welding?  What did you use for filler?  What preheat/PWHT?  Thicknesses, process, etc?

Thickness is 1 and half inches, preheat 150C degree, no PWHT, filler electrode E309L-17 buttered on A36 side then welding (ORIGINAL ELECTRODE WAS INCONEL 112 BUT FAILED BECAUSE OF CRACKING).
Crack observed at temperature reaches 900C degree. Process: Stick welding. Thanks Gary.

Is this a CJP butt weld?  My fist inclination would be to think that he failure is due to the difference in coefficient of expansion, but Inconel woud do better at than than the 309 since its coefficient is half way in-between the two.  Where is the cracking taking place?  Weld, HAZ of CS, HAZ of sst?  How is it being heated and at what rate?  Slow is obviously better.
