whats the best way to check continuity through the shunt coils? my machine is not welding. very small sparks.

Tom, I never worked on one of those, but I suggest using an ohm meter, or a battery powered test light. If You don't have those, You could cobble it together with flashlight batteries, wire and a bulb. Be sure to unhook at least 1 end of each coil so You get true readings.

Sorry I can't help You there, when I have a piece of equipment in front of Me I can figure out what to do, but all I can say is You need to isolate each coil and test it.

Tom-
The blue and brown wires coming thru the top of the generator housing are the wires from your shunt coils, with a analog meter you should read 35-41 ohms.

If you have auxillary but only a sparkle at the rod then more than likely its shorted coils.

ok, I ohmed it out and got a reading of 27. is this bad? and this old machine has the cloth wires coming through.

Your shunt field coils are shorted. Average cost to repair 750 with new armature bearing and complete machine check out.

Tom-
The price I quoted is for disassembly, field replacement, new bearing and reassembly. Followed by complete machine check out, and set up to factory specs.
