i have a plate 3" plate (a572-50), that had all edges burned prior to delivery. i'm having trouble determining grain direction for a charpy. any help would be appreciated.

If you can't find a direction with a few large area macro-etches, I suggest a Charpy test in both directions.

You can send a small piece to a lab.  They can polish and etch one side, and examine under a microscope to determine grain direction.  I think the last time I had to do this, it cost me about $40.

Another method to determine rolling direction is to cut out a 1/2" x 1" x 1" piece. Sand two sides 90 degrees from each other. Then boil in a solution of 50% hydrochloric acid and 50% water for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from boiling solution, rinse, clean and dry. You can then observe endgrain pitting on one side and elongated inclusion pitting on the other side to determine rolling direction.

Cost = $100.00 at our lab.

Best regards,
Mike
