Can someone suggest an electrode to be used for welding a 1/4"x5"x5" 304 stainless steel plate to A36 steel, using either SMAW or GMAW?
Also, which AWS reference would govern this?

Thanks.

I have always used an E309L electrode in the past for joining carbon steel to any austentic stainless steel. You can find some comments in the Appendix to AWS A5.4 concerning the use of this electrode in joining dissimilar metals. The same comments can be found for ER309L in the Appendix to AWS A5.9.
I like the low carbon grades when welding on carbon steel, even though there will be a sacrifice for high temperature applications.

Thanks for your input. It makes sense.
