I am looking at a single pore in the root of an open root GTAW butt weld on steel pipe. The pipe is 8" Sch 80. The pore is no bigger than 1/32" in diameter, but I can't see how deep it goes. I am pretty sure the welder broke the arc with the electrode over the root instead of walking up on to the bevel face first. There is no evidence of lack of fusion or penetration - in fact all looks great except that one little hole. There is no visible silicon or other foriegn matter in the pore.
Does the weld pass for welder qualification (D1.1) or not? If not, can you provide a reference to the criteria? 4.30.1 refers me to 4.8.1. 4.8.1 does not address porosity. I feel pretty sure a porosity pore is distinctly different than a "fusion type discontinuity".
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
