Up Topic Welding Industry / Inspection & Qualification / CWI test questions?? Required books etc.

OK can anyone tell me what books are required for the cWI seminar please??  I was under the impression that I'd need a copy of code I will test too.   Which will probably be D1.1 as I am hearing I need that if I want to get my ICC at a later date, but today a lady with AWS told me that I also need about another 700 bucks worth of books!!  She specified all of the AWS welding handbooks, Guide to visual examination of welds and also Safety in welding, cutting and allied process.  I also wonder about which seminar too purchase now because I wanted too go with the platinum pack which includes a copy of D1.1.  However I think I'll need a copy of it more than one week prior to the test!!!!!!  So if I go this route I'll have 2 D1.1 books!!!!!   The same lady told me there is no way they will refund the price out of your tuition if you've already bought the book.  I am going to try to get someone else tomorrow, I'm hoping I got some bad info.  But any help or advice from you guys and gals would be appreciated. . . .Thanks much

I was under the impression that most of those books come with the platinum pack. The one in particular you will need is the WIT book. (welding inspection technology).
If your D1.1 is 04 or older, you'll need the current one anyway to take the test. I am not sure why you need to the welding handbooks. There is no good answer to this, I've always held that AWS needs to ship the material early. Years back I took it with the platinum pack seminar without any heads up, and had no problem. Richard Duprue was the instructor, if you get him or his equivelent and study hard it should be no problem. For a welder taking the test, it is advisable to identify the NDE types taking the seminar and pick their brains on breaks. Just remember not to be asking questions the day of the test.

Only the code book you take your test to is "Required" you must have it when taking the test! the rest are helpful when studying for the test.
Welding Inspection technology and the workbook along with those you mentioned will help alot, I dont know if they give you those at the seminar but even if
they do,you'll need more than a week to prepare!

after rereading your question, maybe someone else can chime in,after all, i never went to a seminar! I only took the test!

All you should need for study materials before the test is your code book (correct edition) and the Certification Manual for Welding Inspectors.  If you look in the Body of Knowledge that can be printed from the AWS web site, there is a section titled "AWS - Recommended Self Study".  If you notice, most of those titles have an "*" next to them which means they are provided for you at the seminar.

Looking at it, it seems to say that the D1.1/D1.1M is provided for you at the seminar, but you may want to check into that.  Myself and everyone else that took 1104 had to buy our own code book and bring it.

Other than that, as stated, make sure you get the  Certification Manual for Welding Inspectors.  It covers all the subjects for the Fundamentals.  The Welding Inspection Technology book is very similar, but it is given to you at the seminar.  You will need to read, study, and understand both books.  Seems most of the fundamentals was covered in both books.

Again, get the Body of Knowledge.

Practic reading a micrometer, fillet weld gauge and undercut gauge as well.  It's worth it.  Get a cheap Chinese one from sears for $20 .  Try EBAY for the others.

I hear your question loud and clear, Vagabond. I'm also finding it awkward that my platinum pak will supply me an expensive copy of D1.1 but not until I arrive for the seminar. I've probably already doubled up on some publications as I just bought and received Visual Inspection Workshop and Study Guide for 1104 along with my copy of 1104. I have not spoken with the folks at the AWS store yet, having bought my current books online, but it seems to me that if I have been charged for the seminar then I should receive my materials in a timely manner. I'd sure like to have the D1.1 to start tabbing, etc.

You will not receive your copy of D1.1 until your first day of the seminar. This was a complaint of mine also. They should send you the damn books when your check clears!

My inspection and welding go back to 1976 or thereabouts, and I recently re-certified an unlimited plate D1.1 on stick and mig really just for the fun of it. I'm doing some pipe clamps tomorrow for BP (customer, not employer) and I know they'll love them, but I wish I had the D1.1 manual just for the extra bits of ancillary knowledge. It could be, Vagabond, that we're just plain gung ho. Sure, the test will be a bear, and I fully accept that I may not pass. I've certainly failed a few weld tests over the course of my career. But I don't like failing tests. So, I will humbly ask the AWS book store if I might have my copy sooner, but I am consigned to accept AWS policy with grace. Good luck to you.
