I'm looking for a weld rod that is compatible with 9310 steel..I have tried 70s-6 which seemed to work.. But I am not sure if is is correct..

do you mean wire/consumable because to me 70 s-6 is a hard wire and has a backing gas it that would also be relevant.
also there are three types of 9310 steel listed can you be more specific on the name/brand or do you have the astm identification.
again i would recommend the http://www.matweb.com/index.aspx for your interest in the steels composition then once you know that your consumable is easier to find with that information.

9310 is fairly high strength stuff. We have done casting or forgeing crack repairs where we know the material is normalized with 9018-B3. For TIg we'ed opt for 90S-B3.

the spec on the material says E9310.. the Astm number that it refers to is Astm A304.. that is all the information that I have..

ASTM A304-05e2 Standard Specification for Carbon and Alloy Steel Bars Subject to End-Quench Hardenability Requirements.

If you have used ER 70S-6 it will most likely weld just fine(lack of cracking being the criteria I'm speaking of), but these are high hardenability materials intended for high strength applications, and the S-6 will not match the Quench properties of the low alloy material either with or without a quench. In fact, quench won't get you much with S-6.

I'm guessing here, but I would say that you may have an undermatched weld no matter what filler you use, depending upon the specific alloy of course.

This, in my opinion, is screamin for engineering and testing.
