Might make for some interesting talk! I think it said cir. 1953

As long as that engine cranks easy! LOL. That hand crank would get old fast on a stuborn engine!

Q) What is the bubble part at the front of the generator part in your pictures? (opposite end of that crank) All those old SA Lincolns had them. I'm not a mechanic, so I've always wondered.

The exciter and the collector ring housing.

"Aluminum Specialist" hehe

The exciter coils and armature for your 110. The pic might be 1953, but I can tell you for sure that machine is 1942. Very tight. Dad has one at his house.

I like the threded pipe for the racks, and exhaust. I thought the 64' I got my hands on was old.

I got a chuckle out of the "aluminum specialist" myself. Imagine what those guys would think if they saw what we have today!

Aluminum Specialist - He could [and probably did] have had a MIG spoolgun and TIG back then. There were spoolgun controlls that could use 115 VDC and work on that old Lincoln. He probably would not have had a lot of competition for aluminum work.

With the shorthood screen name, I'm going to ask you, but others can chime in:

Why the term shorthood? I know the older machines looks smaller than the newer SA models, but is there something else?

Also, what about "red face"? Was there another brand that Lincoln was throwing around with a ...black face?

I just want to make sure I'm following in a discussion.

Lincoln extended the sheetmetal in the mid 50's. Earlier models had a shorter case, with more of the generator exposed.

Lincoln SA-200's used a faceplate with a red background thru most of the 60's. Models both earlier and later used a black background.

JTMcC.

darin do you collect shorthoods? every time anyone mentions shorthood you are all over it like white on rice. im thinking it might be a obsesive compulsive disorder. do you ever sell any of the short hoods? or do you have a place where you hord them all. does the misses know how many welders you really have? lol just raggin on ya maybe a little jealousy too

I get the look everytime I drag another one home.
Parent - By mody454 (**) Date 11-17-2007 15:06

I've seen a welder like this for sale on ebay about 6 months ago it was extrememly old
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 11-19-2007 13:49
Wouldn't think of it. The old 42 was the first machine I ever touched. Dad and I restored it top to bottom 19 years ago. I had just started working for Dad and had just finished rebuilding the engine in my 77 Cutlass. Little did I know then, that it was a totally different ball of wax. But I fell in love with welder repair on that machine, and haven't even thought about changing course. She's part of the family now.
