Parent - - By raftergwelding (*****) Date 11-27-2007 02:43

Parent - - By mattj Date 11-28-2007 00:07
I've been tank welding for a little over two years, things are slowing down a little in the midwest.  Just seeing what's out there now, don't have my own rig, but am willing to travel and definitely willing to learn.  Not sure if I have the cert that you are looking for, though, what would I need to get in?
thanks, Matt.
Parent - - By doombak (*) Date 11-28-2007 00:26 Edited 11-28-2007 00:40
do you have your b pressure and small bore ticket or a boilers branch cert to weld pressure pipe?
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 11-28-2007 03:25
I was in Ft. Mcmurray last winter and it was -58f (-50c) one morning. And yes, we still pipelined, and yes it sucked.

Parent - - By doombak (*) Date 11-28-2007 21:19
i remember one year in indian cabins for 2 weeks straight my themometer said -62 (same in both c/f) in the mornings by the time it hit -40c your pulling off layers to avoid sweating.  I remember trying to blink and my eyelids would freeze (oh the good ol days)
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 11-29-2007 03:57
hahaahha ya the freezing eyelid thing rings a bell
Parent - By doombak (*) Date 11-29-2007 15:53

Parent - By ZCat (***) Date 11-29-2007 00:02
I spent about 6 weeks in Prudhoe Bay one winter, piping in the Niakuk Field. The coldest I saw was -30 ambient and the wind chill was -78. That was pretty sucky, too. :-)
Parent - By mattj Date 11-28-2007 03:40
No.  The only actual certification I've done is in school, and that was D1.  Since then, it's all been in the field and I never got documentation for it.  Mainly just passing x-rays is about the only certification we do.  I work for a non-union outfit, so I don't have a journeyman card or ticket (what I think you call them in Canada).  Honestly, I've never done much pipe other than fittings on tanks, high or low pressure.  Just got out of school about 2 1/2 years ago, so I'm still getting my feet wet learning different things and trying to learn more. Thanks for the reply,
-Matt.

By "fast paced" do you mean working like a slave or a human?  Benefits? Pay rate?  Union or scab?  Details please?
Parent - - By doombak (*) Date 11-30-2007 16:27
no i mean a guy puts an honest days work in. a decent fabricator should be able to (not have to everyday) fabricate 100 good inches in a day, granted everything is good to go. A good pipeline welder (bead hand ) should be able to do 275 roots in a day on 4" pipe what im saying is we work very hard up here in crap conditions.  There is no benefits for rig welders here we are the "scabs" as you would say but the pay is excellent so who needs benefits ( I use my wifes)
Parent - By SA-200 (**) Date 12-02-2007 01:40
How many can you do a day JTMcC ?
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 12-02-2007 18:49
whoa 5 1/2 klicks of 4" a day? must be from Sask. lol. its so sweet there you only need half the bead in anyway! as long as the first 30 joints pass let er buck! (and the corners and drags). You must have welded with Barry Lowe. I worked on a few lines with him and he was beading 3" .125" in 3 gear in the winter. talk about see ya later!
Parent - - By SA-200 (**) Date 12-04-2007 02:24
He didnt bother shutting off the truck while he welded. :)
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 12-04-2007 05:51
lol yeah sometimes I fall asleep waiting for the back end to catch me. sometimes I am the back end. sometimes I'm both.;)
Parent - - By SA-200 (**) Date 12-06-2007 03:50
I welded about a 1000' of .188  4"pipe today,put it in 3rd gear and went. 5P all the way out. 3/32 bead, 1/8 hot, amd 5/32 cap.
Parent - By downhandonly (***) Date 12-06-2007 06:24
I like 188. seems nice and thick after you're on 125 for awhile.
Parent - - By SA-200 (**) Date 12-07-2007 05:00
So if a good beadhand can do 275 roots in a day does that mean he shuts off and starts his truck 275 times a day???? Do you have to buy the guys flywheels and starters? hehe  Or do they idle their trucks all day long??
Parent - - By dbigkahunna (****) Date 12-07-2007 13:54
That is one weld every 3 min for a 10 hour day. Must be a 10% job and no inspector. Sounds like every one wears tenny shoes.
Parent - - By awspartb (***) Date 12-08-2007 00:34
Sounds like you guys need a union!  Do you stop to go to the bathroom?  Eat a sandwich?
Any inspection?  What's flowing in these pipes?  5/32" rod on small diameter pipe?  Max interpass temp?
The thing must be cherry red.  What code are you working under?  You guys are the reasons unions were formed.
The wheel has gone full circle.  Back to the slave days with no breaks, no benefits, no pension and you get fired if you get injured or too old to produce the numbers.
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 12-08-2007 00:48
work 9 hours get paid 12 (to cap) 14 for the bead, take all my breaks, free fuel, rod and supplies and if you cant run a 5/32 hippy capping 3" .125" downhill you can go home. I know guys who use 3/16". But I don't run for nobody, and I get what I get for joints and if the company I'm working for don't like it they can find someone else.
Parent - - By pipeliner01 (**) Date 12-08-2007 01:06
testify brother
about the whole union thing, they pretty much told me they had no use for more rig welders, (I'm not related to anyone in the pipeline division)
Parent - By downhandonly (***) Date 12-08-2007 01:41
hahahahahahahahaha
Parent - By 798pipeliner Date 12-08-2007 02:29
Have you contacted Pipeliner's Union 798?  If you are a down hill welder and can past the test, you can buy a book and be represented by the best!
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 12-08-2007 00:52
if you were a beadhand you wouldn't be asking these questions. someone would be passing you on the right of way taking your seat while you were trying to get your truck started.
Parent - - By 52lincoln (***) Date 12-08-2007 01:13
Man that sounds like a cut throat world  you work in.
Parent - - By awspartb (***) Date 12-08-2007 02:25 Edited 12-08-2007 02:33
Sounds like a NIGHTMARE world to me.  Look for the Mexicans to take over your welding rig in the coming decade.  You guys work like vegetable pickers.  You're the vegetable pickers of the welding trades......no benefits, get hurt and you're on your own.  Cheaper and faster.  That's what it's all about to these guys.  God help you if you get hurt or sick.  They just dump you out like a can of old used rod stubs.  You're a "consumable commodity" to these guys.  Just like welding rod.  When it's used up or worn out, order a new batch.  Sad thing is that there's another generation of strong backs (and WEAK MINDs) waiting to to take the bait.  Very sad what's happening in the trades.
