Anybody on the AWS forums a traveling field welding engineer (or have the phone number of a buddy who is)? I am currently working at a nuclear power plant as a "Construction Nuclear Engineer" with emphasis on welding, and I am researching hitting the road, either in the US or international. Thought I would see what kind of information/contacts may be in the forum...talking to recruiters sucks!

Looking for ASME work, field engineering, inspection, PWHT etc etc. Any info or leads would be great!! I can add information if needed

There's literally a TON of work out there for field welding engineers.  Unfortunately, most of the time ya gotta go through the recruiter BS.  You might try Sargent & Lundy.  I assume you're exhausted all of the search engines; roadtechs.com etc?  Good luck!

the only reason a guy cant find a job with one of these guys, would be because they don't want one so with an engineers stamp your a shoe in

Stringerbead22,
Look at Bechtel.com    Go to jobs, pick for location "USA" and then "Richland Washington". They are looking for field welding engineers at the Waist Treatment Plant their.  It is a 15 billion dollor project that will last until 2016. It is a nuclear facility. I worked their 2 years ago as a welding engineer, and it was a pretty good job then. Left Bechtel and now with a different company but still keep in contact with some of engineers their.

I have been looking at roadtechs.com, bechtel.com, and epcglobal.com. I will look at the other links too.

I need to do a lot more research before I leave my cush job now and hit the road, I appreciate the reply's.

I just recently left a VERY cush job, literally 8 to 5 for the past 6 years... got sick of "politics" and am very happy to be back out on the road again, of course I miss my wife but being happy in one's  work is also important... and so much more lucrative!!!

I was recently contacted by a couple of companies looking for welding engineers... CNRL has already been listed.  However, there is a large fabricator here on the East Coast of Canada looking for a full time welding engineer called Atcon Group.  They have projects all over Canada.

I was also told by the welding engineer at Nittetsu that they are crying for welding engineers in Europe.

I have been reading a lot about nuclear, and it's revival in the US. I would think there would be plenty of work around the world with new construction and repair of existing power plants, and may jump on the opportunity. I need to learn more about the travel life, and make sure it's what I want to do. If I am going to do it, now is the time. I don't have any kids and my soon to be wife would love to travel within the US or international. I have been trying to figure out how it works with overtime, per diem etc. and what that would be compared to a year around base pay salary. I am not doing this for money as much as I am for an adventure, and maybe see some other places between jobs.

Stringerbead22,
the particular job I'm talking about is a nuclear waist clean up site. It's not hot, it's new construction. There is no per diem, not much overtime but they have a pretty good relocation package. $20,000 to $40,000.

Stringerbead, are you looking at national or international work? Does anybody know how per deim works if you go international? There are some Bechtel contractors that show up at my work and get $70-$100 per day tax free per diem, is there an international rate too? What about if your on the same job for a couple years, do you still get per diem? Hope I am not highjacking the thread,
