i was told that on the old 200's if the generator was smooth round that it was a copper wound generator but if it was octagon shaped it was aluminum wound. my question is my 250 has a octagon shaped gen and i wanted to know what kind of windings it has in it. is this realy that good of a machine compared to my 200's. how do i find out the year of this machine or any of my lincolns.

serial number chart tells you the age: http://www.billswelderrepair.com/WELDER_AGE.html

I have addressed this same subject in previous posts:
Since code numbers span a 2 to 3 year period it is hard to note that. The serial number of the machine will let you know its age. And the field coils in 73 and 74 were aluminum.

When aluminum windings are talked about, know that it is only speaking of the field and series shunt coils (in 73-74). Because since the 1940's the interpole coil sets have all been aluminum. I have pics of generator housings from 47 to 97, I can post them and you try and tell the difference in the age and type windings.

I know for a fact you guys/gals are very knowledgable about the 200's and the others, I was told the 73(f-163)'s are junk they're a bad year,Whats the deal,is that year a big sour lemon?

Like it has been stated on this forum 73-74 machines had aluminum shunt field coils. They did not carry the heat or withstand the demands. But like I have said before, our shop has personally replaced 100's of shunt field coils in these machines, so it is hard to say which 73's and 74's still have aluminum coils. Other than that I have plenty of customers happy with their 73 or 74.

If you like your machine roll with it, because everyone has an opinion

Your serial number will fall in between the numbers listed. The list reflects what the serial number was when they started the year.

So 5868456 falls between 1967 and 1968. Making the machine a 1967.
