im trying to learn pipe welding in a 5g, all of it looks ok except for the bottom, every bead just builds up more and more on the bottom and looks completely diffrent. Mainly it just happens on the filler passes. any suggestions? Using 6010 root and hp, 70+ all the way out.

more angle on your 70+ passes and try to stuff it high....second if it keeps drooping down on you then you might be either running to  hot or not moving fast enough.....my guess would be move faster in your travel speed.

BootLeg,
The two most important things to remember are short arc and make sure you are pausing long enough on the sides.
Because of the awkward position and the fact that your rod is disappearing you need to keep reminding yourself to keep a steady (short) arc and that means feeding your rod upwards as fast as it is burning away.
If you don't pause long enough on the sides it will be lumpy in the middle. Get into the habit when you get to the side of a weave of counting 1,2,3 in your head before you head across to the other side where you do the same. That will help with keeping the weld uniform. After a while it will just become second nature.
Also, remember if you have a lumpy root or hotpass you need to remove those straight away because if you leave them it will just get lumpier and lumpier as you fill it out.
Hope that helps, Good Luck,
Shane

short arc, play with the amps, rod angle very important and travel speed.  you'll get it .  it takes time.

Rule of thumb: work the sides, let the middle take care of itself (similar to what shane had recommended).
Run it cool to start even if you expereince that 'chicken leg' look. It will smooth out with time and your ability to increase current.

I am not being a smart a$$. You weld the bottom like the top, just upside down.
If you weld the top with a side to side weave, do the same on the bottom. If you weld the top with a small U, do the same on the bottom. If you use a circle on the top, then do a circle on the bottom. When you get to the bottom, run a little past 6 o'clock and pause to let the puddle develop, and pull out. You will have a nice round button when you come down the off side, you go a little past the round button, pause and pull out.
You should not have to change the volatge and amperage for the entire cap.

Good advice from all holding the sides is what worked for me. Also hopefully your using 3/32 on 8" to 10" and down. Dbig is right although gravity plays a littlebit of a factor on the bottom vs. the top.

you dont mention the size of pipe bootleg, this is 10 inch 6013 5/32 5g  bottom.the lads have said it all hold the sides rod angle, etc, on larger butts i find an extra 10 amps or so higher helps top and bottom. f/j
