I am in the process of setting up. I have a single wheel f-350. I have seen a past post on converting to a dually. my question is for setting up a rig for the pipeline what are the pros and con for having a dually. i know that most rig pics that are posted are duallys. Has anyone seen a single wheel rig on the line? With not having the room on the bed like a dually and not being able tho carry as much does that play a factor in getting hired on a job or are the just like looking at your weld test. Thanks in advance for any info that  can be given. Bryan K.

The one thing I know and have heard as far load carrying is a with a single wheel the back tires take more abuse than a dually as far as specifications go I think they are pretty dang close I can check farther on monday

alot will look at the appearance of your rig and it usually describes what type of welder you are then you might get to test.

Im gonna have to disagree with you there bud. Appearance isnt everything. Just cause you gotta nice rig doesnt mean you know how to run it. Seen many guys with great looking rigs and all this nice equipment get run off cause theyre hacks. One of my friend has a single wheel 1ton that has a shell on it. When you look at his truck all closed up he looks like a telephone company guy. He has an aluminum tray that rolls out when he drops his tailgate. He has torch, plasma, aircompressor, and multiprocess capabilities. I finally washed my truck for the first time in 3 months so Ill try and get some pics up on the rig setup post for yah. Ill see if my friend wouldnt mind taking some pics of his truck too so you could see. I like it cause everything is locked up out of sight even his machine.

Justin O,

You won't find that in the U.S.
Pickup rigs won't keep a man from getting a test here.

cmays,

If a man makes his living as a pipeline welder, and he is driving a slick, clean, welding rig, it does say several things about his abilities. It says that he takes pride in his work. It says that somewhere, sometime, he's actually made it on the pipeline, for a significant amount of time. It says that his equipment will most likely be reliable.

Of course everyone has seen the guy with the old worn out looking truck who's as slick as anybody, but having good solid equipment does reflect on the welder.

As far as "guys having great looking rigs and all this nice equipment get run off cause they're hacks", If the dudes such a hack how did he make the money to buy/build such a nice truck???

JTMcC.

They finance the ***** it out of it all......
Im just tellin yah what I see around here. The inspection firm that I use tested 10 to 15 welders a day for a solid two month period for a natural gas project in south texas for Lariat ( Sandridge project).  All these guys were pulling up with brand new trucks brand new lincolns and all new nice equipment. 3/4 of the guys couldnt even  get tacked up right. Hell they told me a couple of them welded their damn gap strips in!And ofcourse a good looking rig says alot about a guy(one that has been fabbed out). All I was meaning is that you cannot judge a persons abilities simply by apearance.
Parent - - By Justin O (**) Date 01-07-2008 02:15
Well I pass my test and 100% x-ray all day everyday just dont have the time to build one so i think im gonna finance one. Lol im gonna have a guy build me one.

cmays,

Where pray tell does one finance a pile of 10 gage, 4" channel iron, welding rod and the many small parts needed to build a nice welding bed???

A nice rig, in my line of work, does tell you something. You may prefer to see a bunch of beverly hillbilly type rigs show up to test but I certainly don't.

JTMcC

and, if the welder is such a hack that doesn't know how to tack a set of nipples, how did he get in a position (using your hypothetical) to finance $60,000 in new truck/welding machine/tools? And how does a hack build a slick welding bed? Your arguement doesn't hold up.

Man you keep missing my point in an atempt to argue with everything. They could drive up in a staion wagon and if they were good enough, I would try and  find some where for their skills to be put to use. Im agreeing with you! A nice FABBED OUT bed with good working equipment  does say something about the operator. Im gonna say this one last time though....You cannot judge skill level simply by apearance of their rig! You can argue all you want thats great cause that what this is for. Sure you gotta have working equipment and all the right tools for the job, but dont show up expecting any partisanship based off what your rig looks like... I ask my self that same question all the time but the sad fact is some bankers are off their rocker I know it sounds crazy. Come down here and see what Im talking about hell Ill even buy you lunch.

60000 maybe for the truck alone
then add another 10 to 25 grand for their equipment.
Beverly Hillbillies? LOL thats a good one

I say you have no clue because thats the point I was making in the first place ie..."You cannot judge skill level from what type of rig a guy has" if you would read the posts completely before responding it might help. And you have a good night.

i run a single wheel 06 f350 with a skid. nothing wrong with it but you get more cabinet  space on a dually with a deck but i still fit 6 stands ,rollerheads, bevelers and 2 oxy and  2 acet. bottles and propane and tiger torch as well as a 24 x 30 cabinet on each side plus a foldup 35x50 fabtable with vise and chainvise, 75 pounds of counterweight and fab wheel and its a shortbox too. You just got to be creative with the space you got
Parent - - By gotpipe597 (**) Date 01-06-2008 17:10
is there any chance that  can see some pics of your bed.

i got a drivers siad fender of my 06 i had the passengerside one is busted
Parent - By saipen7000 Date 01-07-2008 06:03
well I agree with  CMAYS ,looks wont tell how good u can weld, I'v seen welders that just got out of a welding school, some very young ones with very little sperience, some of them still single with no kids to feed and perhaps some still living with mom and dad, so they are able to save some money with a couple of turnarounds and buy a nice rig ,but alot of them ...  just cant weld. As for the other part I can say that driving a dually or single it all depends on the kind of project you are  working on, I have worked on the pipe line environment , drilling rigs and petrochemical plants, refineryes etc. Pipe line  and rigs seem to be kind of more informal than petrochemical specialy pertaining to safety,  and driving a rig inside on of this plants ,has alot to do with safety, they dont want to face the situation of a having one of this trucks with a one abused  rear flat tire blocking the traffic for emergency  vehicles.

how much if i need it i mean u need both but if i get enuff i.m gettin a skirted flat bed  but if not
