I'm looking for a shop that'll overhaul an SA-200 near Tampa, FL.  A quick search in yahoo locals turns up nothing.  Anybody know anywhere off hand?  I'll even go as far as Orlando if need be.

would it be pretty much anyone who rebuilds electric motors can rebuild the generator?

i'm looking for a place that'll handle the engine work too.  even if they just worked on the generator and sent the engine away to be rebuilt and then they handle the carb, magneto, idler issues...i'd like to see how much it would cost.  there's a chance I might be able to do a lot of the engine on my own, but you can't really test run it without it hooked up to the generator.  (at least I can't...I don't have an engine stand)  I've been thinking about it, and I think it would be much faster if somebody else worked on it.  I would love to have the pride in saying "I rebuilt it from the ground up," but I'm starting to think it would take me forever.  I know if I had somebody else do it it'll cost a few thousand $$$.

And I was putting out the feelers to see if anybody else had any experiences with any shops around here.

I wish I could help. I have had 2 machines sent up to me from Miami, 1 from Orlando and 1 from Jacksonville.

I just talked to a guy here in tampa who used to rebuild them.  he says he got out of that because people were complaining about the cost of it all.  he said one of the welding stores (Airgas or something) still rebuilds them.

I've been thinking and looking at this thing long enough that I feel like just replacing the brushes, changing the oil, and flushing the antifreeze and seeing if it'll start up.  then, the only thing that stinks about it would be the frame and body...they're rusty, paint peeling messes right now.  :(

why not dude see if it will fire up

the only thing i worry about is the water in the oil.  the antifreeze is still green, so that's a plus.  is it possible for bearings to seize up from sitting for a couple years with water in the oil?

anything is possible, but these engines are close to bullet proof. You will probably have a stuck valve or two. Will the engine turn? Is the machine still in one piece? I can walk you through alot of this if you have the time.

If the engine will turn, then with a rebuilt carb and magneto, new plugs and wires your machine should fire off. Once you get ther let me know and I can email you a wiring schematic on your machine.

sounds good and thanks!  I'm gonna drain the oil and maybe do a few other things this weekend...we'll see how far I get!  I haven't turned the engine over yet...it needs a battery too.  I was looking at some parts schematics trying to learn the names of the parts and found out that the voltage regulator isn't even hooked up.

can you turn the fan by hand? The voltage reg only operates while the engine is running to regulate the voltage from your alternator to your battery. If you have a 1-wire alternator the voltage reg does not need to be hooked up.

ya know, I never thought of that!  I just tried it and yes, it turns and I have to pull on the belt to help the crank turn...so the bearings aren't seized.

we got the engine running...no stuck valves, no crazy noises!  I got lucky!  now I just have to figure out why I can't get very much juice through the welding leads.  I'm gonna start with new brushes, clean up the commutator, and clean all the corrosion off of everything.  If that doesn't solve it then I'll be looking at a real problem!

awsome dude I'm learning these engines really aren't that bad to work on. I just adjusted my valves today and just going down the list getting this thing to work better but yeah these things are pretty fun to work there not like the newer cars. congrats on getting it running

So, I've been reading about flashing the fields on an SA-200.  what exactly does that do?  is that something you have to do on a machine that's been sitting for a few years?  and I read about how to do it on the exciter...but the instructions say to put the positive side of the power source on the right hand brush holder.  my exciter brushes are on top and bottom, not right and left.  does it matter which one?
